In the late 1960”s, the Arthur Amish community saw that they faced increasingly expensive land costs and that their chosen way of life, farming had its limitations with their large family size and population growth. As a group, they resolved at that time to adopt woodworking as an acceptable alternative to farming to create jobs and keep their people employed. Being a religious based group, they also took the stance that they would not boast of their craft through advertising, but instead let the quality of their work speak for itself and let word of mouth be their marketing tool. This belief in high quality has helped to make the Arthur Amish community one of the premier hand crafted oak furniture and cabinetry producing areas in the country.
Our Wood Stores: The Amish, as part of their culture seek to be separate from the “English” world. They would prefer to limit their required contacts when possible. They prefer to live on farms in the countryside, and work either at home or in another Amish owned shop. Our niche is that we represent many of Amish
custom wood shops to you, the public, and thus help them to limit their contact with the outside world.
We started our store back in 1985, when, aware of our experience in both retail and woodworking, a number of Arthur Amish shops expressed a need to us for an “down town” showroom which they were not able to provide. While now a few shops have their own showrooms, many still feel that they would rather keep some distance from the general public. Helping them keep a separation, plus our display inventory, quality Amish suppliers and the ability to assist you with design ideas that make your items truly custom pieces, sets us apart.
In our downtown Arthur showroom, we feature Amish produced, top quality, custom, solid wood furniture. We also carry other table top decorations, small wood products local hand stitched quilts, gifts and gourmet coffee whole and ground beans, and a wide variety of gourmet teas.
We encourage people to visit us at our store in downtown Arthur, in the heart of the Illinois Amish Country, in order to get a view of the quality custom wood craftsmanship. It gives you the chance to see quality Amish furniture made in solid cherry, hickory, walnut, quartersawn white oak, red oak, and maple in a wide variety of stain colors. Our showroom features different styles of tables, chairs, hutches, bedroom, living room, entertainment centers, gun cabinetry and office furniture. We also encourage you to bring your drawings or sketches of custom furniture that you would like built. In addition to the the showroom displays and the images we offer thru the web, we also custom build furniture in many styles including Mission, Country, Queen Anne, Shaker, and Victorian in your choice of woods including oak, hickory, walnut, cherry, quarter sawn oak and maple.
Us Personally: Our family members have been retailers on main street in Arthur for three generations. As the second and third generation on Vine St in Downtown Arthur, we have been successfully serving the public in a number of retail areas over these years and more specifically have been involved in the custom Amish furniture and wood industry since 1970. Our family has not only worked in the retail side but also directly in the production of the furniture and cabinetry. We have an Arthur woodworking history that we are proud of.
